Explanation of how a sleeve works.

A sleeve is generally a composite structure with various urethanes and other plastics. It is a tubular instrument that fits onto a steel mandrel (printing roller).The Sleeves inner diameter is slightly smaller than the mandrels outer diameter (interference fit). Air pressure (6 bars required) is applied to the steel mandrel where pressure builds up within it. As the pressure builds it bleeds air through holes on the mandrel which have
been created in specific areas. The sleeve is then pushed over the air holes from one side, creating an air bearing.

The inner sleeve will expand enough so as to allow it to smoothly slide onto the mandrel. Once the sleeve is in position and located (via the pin on the mandrel and slot on the sleeve) the air supply to the mandrel is turned off. The sleeve will squeeze itself onto the mandrel forming a steadfast grip (interference fit). This will prevent the sleeve from slipping.
